Donald I. Barringer, Jr. ASHTABULA – Donald Ira Barringer, Jr., 77, of West 57th Street died unexpectedly Saturday, August 4, 2007 at his home. He was born June 27, 1930 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Donald I. and Helen (Mundy) Barringer, Sr. and had been an Ashtabula resident for the past 20 years, moving here from Chicago. After high school, he attended Kalamazoo Valley Junior College where he played baseball (pitcher and outfielder) for 2 years. He then played while serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950 and after the service, played some semi-pro baseball before injury stopped his baseball career. A purchasing agent for Astatic Corporation in Conneaut for 10 years, he transferred to Admiral Screw in Chicago where he worked 20 years until his retirement. Mr. Barringer was a life member of the VFW Post #943, the American Legion Dewey Howlett Post #103, the East Ashtabula club, and BPO Elks #208. He was an avid golfer (in his younger days) and sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching his grandkids in all their activities. His survivors include his wife, Gerry (Murphy), whom he married June 26, 1952; two children, Donald I. Barringer III of Auburn, IN and Diane Cochran of Eastlake; five grandchildren, Jerod (Angela) Auxier, Jacob Auxier, and Jedediah Auxier, all of Ashtabula, and Katelyn Barringer and Colleen (Tom) Beekman; one great-granddaughter, Madelyn; and his sister-in-law, Elaine Barringer of Vicksburg, MI. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Donna Balinski and Janet Ramlow; one brother, Robert Barringer; and his parents. A Celebration of His Life will be held from 4:30 to 6 P.M. on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at the American Legion Dewey Post #103, 1804 West 19th Street, Ashtabula. Friends are asked to bring stories and memories to share. The American Legion will conduct their memorial service at 5PM. Contributions may be made to the family. Available at www.ducro.com
