Obituary of Hazel Eileen Scafuro

Hazel Eileen Scafuro, 94, of Ashtabula passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the Hospice Unit of the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

She was born August 1, 1923 in Kingsville the daughter of the late Aaron and Mabel (Burt) Hoover. She graduated from Kingsville High School and remained a lifelong area resident. Hazel married the love of her life Carmen Scafuro on November 30, 1942.

Hazel owned and operated Hazel's Beauty Shop and Hazel's Tower of Beauty for many years. She enjoyed gardening, classical music, cooking and baking. She was a talented seamstress making most of the clothing for her children as they grew up as well as purses and pocket books. In her later years, she enjoyed to quilt and was sure to make all of her children and grandchildren a special quilt to keep as an heirloom. Hazel also was the creator of Hoover Estates on the corner of Rt. 193 and Plymouth Ridge Road, she created the properties from her families original farmland and was very proud of all the beautiful homes that were built there over the years.

She is survived by her husband of almost 76 years, Carmen; children, Dolores (Dale) Riley of Ashtabula, Alice Marthaller of Conneaut, Jack (Marge) Scafuro of Ashtabula, Linda (Joe) Petros of Ashtabula and David (Joanie) Scafuro of Ashtabula; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Scafuro was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Lacy in 2010; siblings, Helen, Arlo, Marion, Mary and Harold; and her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Peace- St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with Father David Bridling presiding. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
