Obituary of Thomas Leroy Merritt

Thomas Leroy Merritt, Sr., 78, received his wings on September 13, 2018, at the Hospice of the Western Reserve.

 

He was born July 31, 1940 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Alvie and Mary (Barrille) Merritt and moved to Ashtabula County in 1963. Tom worked at Reliance Electric for 32 years before his retirement in 1998. He married Joy Campbell on April 8, 1993.

 

Tom was a jack of all trades and a true craftsman; he enjoyed woodworking and remodeling in his spare time. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 

He is survived by his wife Joy; sons, Thomas Merritt, Jr., Jeffrey (Tammy) Merritt, Douglas (Pam) Osburn; daughter, Michele (Joseph) Platano; sisters, Nancy (Melvin) Dixon and Rosie Carpenter; grandchildren, Veronica, Kelly, Thomas III (Rose), Jeffery Jr., Andrea (Lyle), Ashley (Brandon), and Gregory; and nine great-grandchildren.

 

Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon; brother, Benny Merritt and his wife Marilyn; brother-in-law, Joseph Carpenter; and his parents.

 

At his request cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 5PM at 635 Industry Rd., Conneaut, Ohio.

 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
