Obituary of Robert William Smock

Robert William Smock August 21, 1942 – December 25, 2018 Robert "Bob" William Smock passed away on December 25, 2018 under hospice care in the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at age 76. Born in 1942 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to the late William Grant Smock and Lois Feasler Smock, Bob spent several years living in Erie, Pennsylvania while his father was fighting in WWII. After earning a BS in Chemical Engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Bob married Dorothy Ann Driscoll in 1964 in Warren, Ohio. Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothy Driscoll Smock, daughters Karen Smock (Eric Vandal) and Linda (Scott) Stratton; grandchildren Quinn, Nate, and Emma Stratton; brother Douglas Smock, and sister Deborah Smock Aframe. Bob and Dorothy called many places home in the 54 years they spent together, including Illinois, Massachusetts, and Oklahoma. No matter where they lived, Bob and Dorothy always spent part of the summer in Ashtabula at the family cottage, enjoying many laughter-filled evenings on the porch at cottage #8 and watching the sun set over Lake Erie. They moved to Ashtabula to live year-round after Bob retired as the senior vice-president of PennWell's global energy group in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Family, friends, and former work colleagues will all remember Bob's unique sense of humor. He liked to make himself laugh and if others appreciated his wit, which they often did, all the better. An avid reader, Bob liked giving and receiving book recommendations. Bob also loved movies, particularly those directed by Alfred Hitchcock. A lifelong fan and student of military history, Bob enjoyed building model airplanes and playing flight simulation computer games, breaking multiple joysticks in his determination to win every WWII battle. Gardening, rooting for the Browns and Steelers, playing bridge, and doing puzzles were also favorite hobbies. A private memorial service will be held in the summer in Ashtabula.
