Obituary of Anthony R. "Tony" "Deige" DeGennaro
Anthony "Tony" "Deige" R. DeGennaro, 82, of Ashtabula passed away June 5, 2019 at UPMC-Hamot Medical Center surrounded by his family.
He was born October 12, 1936 in Ashtabula the son of the late Ralph DeGennaro and Lena C. (Merlene) DeGennaro. Tony graduated from Ashtabula High School Class of 1956. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served our country until he was medically discharged due to his eyesight.
Tony married the love of his life Mary Louise Evans at Mount Carmel in Ashtabula on December 10, 1959. Deige worked for 22 years at Loblaws in Ashtabula, and then worked for a short time at Rockwell Plastics and Man Power before accepting a position at the Ashtabula Area City Schools where he finished his career in 2000 after working there for 19 years.
Deige was an avid Cleveland Sports Fan. He enjoyed all sports even if he wasn't good at them. In his younger years he attempted to try out for the Indian's but the try outs were cancelled due to rain. Tony enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing cards with friends and going to the casinos. He was a huge supporter of his family and most of all enjoyed spending time with his children, and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Mary Lou; children, Anthony DeGennaro, Judy DeGennaro, and Yvonne (Leo) Sackett; brothers, Ralph and Steve DeGennaro; grandchildren, Andrew (Niki) Norris, Kara (Scott) Schulz, Kyle Sackett, Lauran Sackett, and Tanya Fitzer; great-grandchildren, Caden and Everly Schulz; his amigos, Tony Diego and Norman Simko; and his chosen brothers, Jack Elliot and Ralph "Foo" Varckette; and adopted daughter, Alice Harden.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Mary Alice DeGennaro; nephew, Ralphie DeGennaro; brothers-in-law, Michael "Milo" Evans, Paul Evans, and John Evans; and mother-in-law, Josephine Evans.
A Celebration of Anthony's Life will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2019 starting at 2:00 PM at the home of his daughter Judy DeGennaro, 2299 Lillie Rd., Jefferson, Ohio 44047.
The family would like to thank, his nurses, aides, hospice, doctors at Hamot Hospital in Erie for the care they gave to Tony during his illness, and especially Robin Aponte and Pam Andes.
