Obituary of George E Ducro, III
George Edward Ducro III, 90, of Ashtabula, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Saybrook Landing.
He was born April 7, 1929 in Ashtabula, the son of the late George E. and Thelma (Swedenborg) Ducro, Jr. A1947 graduate of Ashtabula High School, George attended Denison University and graduated from (Case) Western Reserve University.
He joined the Ohio National Guard which was activated during the Korean Conflict as the 137th Armored Division. He served with the Army from October 11, 1951 to August 26, 1953 and remained with the National Guard until his retirement on April 7, 1989 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He married Barbara June (Greceldnes) in September of 1977 and together they shared many wonderful adventures and memories.
Associated with his father and brother, George helped with the family business, the Ducro Furniture Company which operated in several locations in the Ashtabula area over the years. He served two terms as Ashtabula City Ward 4 Councilman from 1962-1965, as City Council President from 1966-1969, and as City Manager from 1970-1971. Following his political life, George worked for the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department from 1976 until his retirement in 1991. During that time, he served as a jail corporal, sergeant, and assistant warden.
George had served on the Board of Directors for the First Federal Savings and Loan and was an avid collector of Ashtabula Post Cards and Griswold cast iron paraphernalia. He enjoyed skiing, bicycling, and history and was one of Ashtabula's greatest storytellers.
His survivors include his sons, Phil (Barbara) Ducro of Loveland, Ohio and George E. "GED" (Barbara White) Ducro, IV of East Hartland, CT; grandson, Andrew Ducro; his faithful caregiver who had become one of his closest friends, Brenda Tackett; dear friend, Mary Jane Bumgarner; and his faithful K-9 companion Chipper.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ducro on March 6, 2014; his brother, Thomas A. Ducro; and his parents.
A memorial service will be held 11AM on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4901 Main Ave., Ashtabula with Fr. Peter Nielsen presiding. Inurnment will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
