Obituary of Carmen Scafuro
Carmen M. Scafuro
ASHTABULA- Carmen Martin Scafuro, 94, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 6, 2019.
Carmen was born on November 12, 1924 in Ashtabula, the son of Fernando and Vincenza (Guerra) Scafuro and was a graduate of Ashtabula High School. He played trumpet in the band and tried to learn violin in later years.
Carmen was a veteran of the United States Navy and was proud to have served his country.
A dedicated employee of the New York Central Railroad, Carmen was employed for forty two years starting as a brakeman and ending his career as a conductor. He remained close to his friends on the railroad and regularly met with them.
Carmen married the love of his life Hazel Hoover on November 30, 1942. For seventy six years Hazel and Carmen were as one, now they are one again. It was Carmen’s blessing to care for his beloved Hazel during her illness.
Carmen was a man of many talents; he built two homes for his family, his last home was a cabin in the woods for his beloved Hazel. His gardens were the envy of many; anything he touched seemed to produce well. His grape arbors were a source for his hobby of wine making. A wood carver he made many beautiful pieces and gifted them to his family and friends. To relax he would listen to Mario Lanza and other classical music and piece together jigsaw puzzles. As a young family, Carmen, Hazel and the family enjoyed traveling and camping. They visited all fifty states in the continental United States. Carmen has been to Europe on several occasions. His last trip was to Greece with his daughter, Dolores in May of this year. He enjoyed history and these many trips gave him the chance to understand and study the history of the many places he visited.
Carmen will be remembered as a man who was dedicated to his family; he was a good son, brother, husband, dad and grandpa.
Carmen is survived by his children, Dolores (Dale) Riley of Ashtabula, Alice Marthaller of Conneaut, Jack (Marge) Scafuro of Ashtabula, Linda (Joe) Petros of Ashtabula and David (Joanie) Scafuro of Ashtabula; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
