SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP- Joanne Elizabeth Hiam Coursen, ”The Niagara Princess” has died. Joanne died Tuesday, August 18th 2020 at Saybrook Landing Nursing Care.
Joanne was born February 9, 1942 in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Weston (W.W.) Hiam and Dorothy Irene Kirkendahl. She resided in Niagara Falls until 1950 when she and her family moved to Ashtabula. Joanne lived everyday as if she was in Niagara Falls. It had a significant impact on her life.
Joanne was active in Rainbow Girls and later in Order of Eastern Star in Ashtabula and Kingsville. She participated in the Miss Ashtabula Pageant in 1960. A 1960 graduate of Ashtabula High School; she briefly attended Kent State Ashtabula. She enjoyed music and singing in school.
In 1962 she married the late Terry T. Coursen at St. Peters Episcopal Church. She had 3 children, Scott, Justine and Tyler. Joanne enjoyed child care and ran a day care from her home for many years.
Joanne will be remembered for being vivacious and loving of life and friends during her life. She loved new cars and new furniture and her make-up and lipstick.
She is survived by her children, Scott Coursen, Justine Coursen Lee and Tyler Coursen (Heather);her four grandchildren, Azaria Mullen (Nick), Spencer Lee (Trinity) and Raymond and Carmela Coursen; her four great grandchildren, Kyler and Irelynn Mullen and Carson and Hazelynn Lee; niece, Sandi Frasure (Dan) nephews, Joseph Wild and Christopher Hiam;two cousins Randy and Murray Hiam.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her bother, Eric Hiam; sister, Suzanne Hiam Wild; her beloved husband Terry Coursen in December 2017.
The family would like to thank the staff of Saybrook Landing and Bella Care Hospice for their generous and loving care.
Private graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in N. Kingsville Ohio. She and her husband, Terry will be laid to rest at the same service.
