ASHTABULA – Wesley “Sam” Melvin Verdi, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on September 28, 1928 in Ashtabula, he was a son of the late Thomas and Minnie (Desko) Verdi. On March 11, 1983, Wesley married his beauty queen, Rosa “Rose” Jeffrey-Verdi. The valedictorian of his class at Ashtabula High School when he graduated in 1949, he was a straight A student and never missed a day of school through his entire educational career in the Ashtabula Area City Schools. He worked at N.Y Central for 7 years and also worked as a trim carpenter for 45 years. He attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and was a faithful fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indians and the Browns. Wesley always loved sports and, along with his wife, he managed the local baseball pony league for many years. Left to cherish his memory is his step-son, Ralph (Jenise) Jeffrey of Columbus; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Jeffrey of Andover; six grandchildren, Arville R. Jr., Wesley J., Ray J., and Heather Jeffrey, Talitha Johnson, and Crystal Valentine; and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Wesley was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosa Jeffrey-Verdi on February 12, 2019; step-son, Arville Jeffrey in 2010; grandson, Michael “Radio” Jeffrey; and his 8 siblings, Gloria Shupska, Marie Varckette, Molly Babcock, Dolores Hudok, Kay Freeborn, Flo Coursen, Frank Verdi and Norma Erickson. A graveside service will be held 11AM Monday, September 14, 2020 at Edgewood Cemetery, State Road, Ashtabula. Friends and family are encouraged to bring a memory or story to share.
