Obituary of Mary Katherine Patterson

Mary Katherine Patterson, 74, of Dorset passed away peacefully at home under the loving care of Robbie, Kalley, Abriel, and Sydney; she was surrounded by her loving family on Friday, October 23, 2020. She picked a beautiful fall day, her favorite season. She was born August 23, 1946 in Harmon, Virginia the daughter of the late Pete William Carroll and step-father Floyd Childs and mother, Mary Ann (Turner) Carroll-Childs. Katherine spent her life as a caregiver. She worked for many years as a nurse's aide for Ashtabula Regional Home Health Care. Later in life she provided rooms to people with mental and physical disabilities. Giving them hope and independence, serving as their advocate and mentor, she loved everyone and never left anyone without a roof over their head. Katherine was always a giver; her food pantries were always open. She loved canning and gardening and she always shared her crops with anyone that needed them. No one left her house hungry. Halloween was her favorite holiday and she enjoyed playing tricks on her family. Her funny personality created many enjoyable memories for the family. She was the creator of the "Plunger Ride" and that will continue to be carried on by her family. Christmas was always special to her as well; she always made sure everyone had a gift for Christmas. Katherine would often wrap and give 100's of gifts to make sure everyone would receive something. Katherine enjoyed BINGO and bowling, she loved gardening and decorating with flowers; she also enjoyed raising chickens and especially loved her rooster Harry. Most of all she looked forward to family gatherings and spending time with her sisters, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Katherine is survived by her children, Mary "Cricket" (Doug) Morgan, Patricia "Trish" (Phil) Calaway, Ruby "Jeanie" (Tim) Simpkins; her grandson who was more like a son and also her caregiver, Robert "Robbie" (Kalley) Rood' sisters, Virginia (Robert) Koller, Cookie (Tim) Smith, and Linda (Gary) Nichols; extended mother to Dora and Emma; as well as 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Ann Rhodes; sons, James and Clarence Dawson; brothers, Ray and Fred Carroll; great-grandson, Bryan Anthony Rood; and her parents. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 11AM at Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio. Burial will follow at Dorset Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 from 6-8PM at the funeral Home.
