Please share a memory of Lenel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Lenel “Doby” Moore, 95, on January 3, 2021. He was born August 17, 1925, our loving and devoted father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, all whose lives he touched. He left us while sleeping peacefully. Born in Augusta, Arkansas, he witnessed incredible changes in the world, being one of the first African Americans to serve in the U.S. Marines Corps. He was a Montford Point Marine and served in World War ll. He served on Iwo Jima, which saw some of the most brutal fighting in the Pacific during World War II. The United States Marine Corps presented him with a Congressional Gold Medal in 2012. He dedicated his life to serving his country, family, and his community. He was a proud Boy Scouts of America Leader for over 15 years, he loved being a scout master mentoring his sons and the other scouts, he welcomed foreign exchange students in his home, volunteered at Ashtabula Dream Center, and was selected for the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. He had been a Deacon at his churches (Miracle Temple and New Hope COGIC) and a proud husband and father of 9 children. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children Rosemary Moore of Little Rock, AR, Leveridra Lee of Oak Park, MI, Cathy Partridge of Youngstown, Clovis Maxwell (God Daughter) of Cleveland, and Sandra Moore (Jackie), Timothy Moore (Angie), Lennel Moore, Jeffery Moore all of Ashtabula; 28 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Alice Moore whom he was married to for 57 years before she passed in 2003; daughter Linda Sue Wright Priest in 1992; son, Joseph Moore in 2000; his parents; 7 brothers, Jerry, Grover, Add, Ed, Demas, Anderson, and Justice Moore; and 6 sisters, Frances Carr, Aretha Young, Lizzie Lowe-Stokes, Laura Wiggins, Oragony Moore, and Savanah Williams. Lenel lived a full life as a wonderful husband and father and worked at Gil Lieber/Cobbledick Buick after moving to Ohio in 1947 where he became a permanent resident and retired comfortably. He loved fixing bikes and giving them to the neighborhood children and was a master in carpentry. Most of all, he loved his family and instilled values in his children, grandchildren, and community. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A Celebration of Life will be held 11AM Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Gateway Church, 2300 Austinburg Rd, Ashtabula. Supt. Mitchell Jones of Miracle Temple COGIC will officiate with Pastor Emory Moore of New Hope COGIC delivering the eulogy. Burial will be held at Edgewood Cemetery.
