Wanona "Nona" Marie (Mixer) Smith, 89, of Ashtabula passed away peacefully, Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at the Lantern of Saybrook.
She was born December 19, 1931, in Ashtabula, Ohio the daughter of the late Harold and Esther (McCann) Mixer. A lifelong area Ashtabula resident except for 4 ½ years she spent in Mayfield Hts., Ohio. Wanona married the love of her life Frederick J. Smith on October 8, 1949.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Our Lady of Peace, St. Joseph Church in Ashtabula, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Ashtabula Woman's Club.
Nona worked in a family-owned accounting firm, which her husband Fred opened in 1975, Smith and Company, CPA's. She retired in 2005. The office is still currently owned by her son, Ronald M. Smith, CPA. Wanona also was a Mary kay consultant since July of 2002. Wanona enjoyed hosting family gatherings and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 ½ years, Frederick J. Smith, Sr.; her parents, Harold and Esther Mixer; daughter, Anita Obhof, her son-in-law, Alan Hert; four sisters, Alice Gegen, Lucille Mixer, Beverly Stillman, and Maribelle Shields; four brothers, Daniel, David, and Harold Mixer, and Samuel Mixer in infancy; and one great-granddaughter, Isabel Obhof in infancy.
Wanona is survived by her daughter, Grace Hert of Evansville, Indiana; sons, Thomas (Dianne) Smith of New Orleans, LA, Ronald (Charmaine Brink) Smith of Austinburg, Ohio, Frederick (Arlene) Smith, Jr., of Avon Lake, Ohio; son-in-law, Larry Obhof of Austinburg, Ohio; ten grandchildren whom they lovingly called her grandma "Nonnie". Frank (Jessica) Obhof, Larry (Nicole) Obhof, Thomas Obhof, Robert Obhof, Michael (Kristen) Obhof, Fred (Amy) Obhof, Marc Hert, Megan (Kevin) Helton, Tyler (Natasha) Smith, and Jennifer (Chris) Hocutt; fourteen great-grandchildren, Garret and Noelle Hocutt, Gabrielle, Lillian, and Annabelle Obhof, Lilianna and Evelyn Rose Smith, Michael Jr. and Charlie Obhof, Beckett and Collins Anna Helton, Ronald Obhof, and Jailyn and Jordyn Alderman; and one sister Esther Mae Broad of Ashtabula.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 12PM at Our Lady of Peace, St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10AM until 11:30AM at Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
