Obituary of Roy Louis Nieman

Roy L. Nieman, 71, passed away Friday, January 21, 2022, at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. Born December 20, 1950, in Detroit, MI, Roy graduated from Edsel Ford High School in 1969. After graduating, he gained a bachelor and master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, where he also met the love of his life, Katherine (Vlier) Nieman. They married on August 18, 1973. Roy worked in Cincinnati for an environmental firm before moving to Geauga County to work for the Geauga County Sanitary Engineers. He retired after 34 years. While working at the Sanitary Engineers, he became an EMT and a firefighter for Chardon Vol. Fire Department and later Hambden Vol. Fire Department, ultimately becoming an Advance EMT. In 1997, Roy moved to Ashtabula County to have room for his beloved Percheron Draft Horses. He purchased his first Percheron in 1978 and at one time had 16 Percherons on the farm. He had a passion for showing the horses at Geauga Fair for 40 years, Lake County Fair for 25 years and Ashtabula Fair for 3 years. Roy leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Kathy Nieman; sister, Alberta (Samuel) Lalomia and 4 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, younger brother, Mark and adopted son, Daniel. Per Roy’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. A Celebration of Life will take place in the summer.
