My deepest condolences to the Franley family. Hal was not only my fraternity brother at Phi Theta Phi but was also my pledge brother in 1974. He always displayed the class and dignity of our brotherhood. Rest in peace Hal. I applaud you for the rich life you have lived.....Steven J. Stake

Dr franley was my dentist and he was a very nice guy. When I was a kid I was watching a men's basketball league game that my stepdad played and Dr franley played as well. Anyways Dr franley saved my life because I got stuck in the bleachers and was suffocating. Dr franley ran straight to me during his game and saved my life. I've always been greatful for him saving my life

Hal Franley was my best friend during the formative four years my family lived in Jefferson, when my father was the pastor of the (then) First Methodist Church. It’s been 55 years since we moved away, I’ve rarely been back, my brother Russ has never been back, yet we both consider Jefferson to be our hometown.
Hal and I met in third grade. Over the next four years we were never more than a few desks apart at school and, Jefferson being the metropolis it still is, none in our elementary school cohort were more than a few blocks apart when we were not in school. The gift of bicycles gave us the mobility needed to assemble a large enough crowd of ~10-year-old boys to field two teams for virtually any after school, weekend or summer sporting contest. Of course, the only choices we could imagine then were baseball, football, basketball or frisbee. No one ever suggested soccer and to my knowledge none of us knew of its existence.
Hal excelled at any sport involving a ball. Size did not matter. I on the other hand was only marginally coordinated enough to avoid being killed by the ball in use. (My Little League career lasted exactly three of Brad Leary’s fast balls, none of which I saw until the ball was being returned to the mound). With Hal, I’d like to think it was an age thing – he was, after all, five months older than me. I only got to play golf with him once. We were both 12. Even then he could hit a drive 200 yards, while my drives were tearing the heads off 200 worms. It was not an age thing.
At some point we became fascinated with the Hardy Boys book series. We read all of them. I think Hal owned most of them. Then it was the Tom Swift series. In sixth grade we discovered that the public library had Nancy Drew books. Neither of us would ever buy one, of course, nor confess to borrowing one from the library. It was a macho man thing.
We both thought Bill Cosby was the funniest guy on Earth. We had most of his skits memorized word for word, and between us had all of his albums. I was subsequently dubbed “Milkshake,” Hal – wait for it – “Old Weird Harold.” It was a time when Cosby was a national treasure and parents never knew precisely where their children were, although we were never more than two phone calls removed from someone who had seen us. Everyone in town had a three- or four-digit phone number and you had to ask the operator to connect the parties.
Franley’s had a pool. No one had a pool back then. We must have driven Hal’s mother to the brink. All mothers eventually look for the source of their gray hair. I’m sure we were the source of at least some of hers. As a first time pool visitor, I still recall the knowledge imparted by the sign in their breezeway assuring us that since none of the 158 W Jefferson residents would ever be inclined to swim in any of our toilets, we should forever reciprocate by not peeing in their pool. Probably a necessary sign at that age. Noted. Still laughing over that one.
Time passed slowly at that age. After all, at age 10, a year encompasses a very large percentage of your conscious memory. At the time, it seemed as if we had lived there nearly forever, but eventually it came time for us to leave. The last stop we made on our way out of town was to the Little League game in progress to say a final farewell. Hal and I saw each other precious few times over the next decade. There was a trip to Cedar Point, but as life got in the way of life, our time together in Jefferson eventually faded to sepia.
The last time I saw Hal was ~25 years ago, when he was still working. We had lunch at the Diner and talked about old times. This is significant because the Diner sits close to? – on top of? – the old Stutzman’s News Room. Hal anointed the (then) new owners “Aunt Millie” and “Uncle Oscar.” We both spent many happy hours in their little store. As my employment then was as an information transfer technician for the Plain Dealer, I picked up my newspapers there at 0600 every day. Hal’s obituary was sent to me as a photo by one of the girls who lived two doors down from us, because she knew Hal and I were friends. What she didn’t know, and I didn’t see until the following morning, was that the obituary adjacent to Hal’s in her photo, was Aunt Millie’s. I have to believe – no, I know – Hal is yucking it up in Heaven with her and Uncle Oscar, Doc Sr, Joan and doubtless others, none of whom are wearing a mask.
Godspeed, Hal.
