Ashtabula – Shelley Jean McKay, age 71, was reunited with her family in heaven on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Shelley was born April 6, 1951, in Ashtabula, OH. She was a lifelong Ashtabula resident, growing up in Ashtabula Township. A 1969 graduate of Edgewood Senior High School, Shelley was an honored member of the Warrior Marching Band, following her passion in the drum line and receiving the John Phillip Sousa award her senior year. Shelley received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Kent State University, and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University. After working many years in health care services, she retired from Lake Home Health Care in Mentor, Ohio. Shelley was baptized and, in her youth, attended East Side Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula and later attended Morning Star Church of Christ in Madison, OH. She was very proud of her Ashtabula heritage and recently served several years on the board of the Ashtabula Maritime & Surface Transportation Museum. She was an animal lover from a very young age. She was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and enjoyed riding and competing in local horse shows in her early years. She leaves behind her beloved dachshunds, Archie and Levi. She is survived by her sister Kathy [McKay] Sparks (Donald) of Canal Fulton, OH; nephew Brian Coccia (Laura) of New Albany, OH, nieces Shannon [Coccia] Eggleston (Brian) of Union, KY and Margaret [Coccia] Stanton (Jonathon) of Delaware, OH; step-nieces Julie Sparks of Madeira, OH and Carrie Sparks of Worthington, OH; great-nieces and great-nephews Emily and Jack Eggleston, Anna and Cecilia Coccia, and Cameron and Luke Stanton; cousins Rebecca [McKay] Klang (Erik) of Minnetrista, MN, David McKay (Connie [Armstrong]) of Westerville, OH, Linda Gray (Patty) of Sarasota, FL, James Gray, of Wellington, FL, Tom Gray (Vicky), of Tallmadge, OH, Richard Gray (Kathy) of Ball Ground, GA, James Chapman (Sybil) of Lakeland, FL, Richard Stobbs (Barbara) of Newark, OH, Brent Stobbs (Judy) of Etna, OH, Marcelyn [Stobbs] Brainerd of Chattanooga, TN; an aunt Isabelle Gray of Tallmadge, OH, and an uncle Richard Severa (Denise), of Spring, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Gladys McKay of Ashtabula and by several cousins, aunts and uncles. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Michael West, Pastor of Morning Star Church of Christ, Madison, OH, officiating. Private burial service will be at Edgewood Cemetery, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashtabula Maritime & Surface Transportation Museum, 1071 Walnut Blvd, Ashtabula, OH 44004 or to the Morning Star Church of Christ, 7725 S Ridge Rd, Madison, OH 44057.
