Obituary of Herta Gierth Warner
Please share a memory of Herta to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Herta Gierth Warner, 77, formerly of Ashtabula passed away in her sleep, peacefully at the home of her daughter on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, after a decades long battle with Sjogrens and Systemic Scleroderma.
She was born February 3, 1945, in Transylvania, Romania, the daughter of the late Daniel and Johanna Gierth and had been an Ashtabula resident most of her life. She arrived in the United States at age five knowing no English and yet was so smart she graduated early. She graduated from Kent State University Main Campus and was teaching American History at Riverside High School by her early 20s.
It was at Riverside High School where she met her husband, John. They married in 1969. She then went on to teach at West Junior High and later at Ashtabula High School where she was also a Cheerleading Advisor. She retired in 1996. Teaching was not just a job to her, she loved the children and making a difference in their lives was important to her. She would often go the extra mile and volunteer her time tutoring students in math, always trying to get them to be their best.
Herta was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and a world traveler. France and Romania remained at the top of her list as favorites. An avid reader, she loved going to the library to find her next book. She was extremely talented at sewing, baking and gardening and had a knack for finding a 4-leaf clover any time she was outdoors. Above all else, her biggest joy in life was spending time with her family. She was most proud of being a mother.
Herta was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1998; brothers, Ronald and Edmund Gierth; grandson, Jason McClintic; and her parents.
She is survived by her siblings, Mathilda Wilfong and Richard Gierth; her children, John (Dawnn) Warner and Kari Warner; stepchildren, Susan (William) McClintic, MaryBeth Meason, and Christina Luke; grandchildren, Emmalyn and Isabella Warner, Chaz, Jason, Dylan, Michael McClintic, John and Matthew Meason, Katie Abercrombie, Hillary Tinley, and Alex Luke; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was also very close with her nieces Clare Gierth (California), Annie Curtis (Texas) and Rose Gierth (Texas).
Calling hours will be held at the Zaback-Williams-Ducro, 500 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 from 12-1PM on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, with a service to follow at 1PM with retired Lutheran Pastor David Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeview Cemetery in Ashtabula.
Should friends desire memorial contributions instead of flowers, they may be made to the family, who will make a special contribution in her memory to a local library at a later date.
