Georgene Marie Bethel, 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Sanctuary of Geneva. She was born July 10, 1925, in Granville, Ohio the daughter of the late George and Alice (Peters) Blanchard. She was a lifelong area resident of Steubenville, then the Wintersville area. She graduated from Steubenville High School in 1943. She married her husband Joseph V. Bethel in March of 1949. Georgene thrived working at the Wintersville branch of Bank One for over 30 years as the head cashier, retiring in 1992. Eventually after many years of cajoling, she moved to the Ashtabula area in 2005 to be close to her family. Georgene was a lifelong member of Finley United Methodist Church in Steubenville, and she attended the First Covenant Church here in Ashtabula. She was a woman of strong faith and was a member of the church choir and often sang solo for many weddings and funerals. She also sang solo opening for Bobby Vinton on numerous occasions. Mrs. Bethel was a member of Women's Fortnightly Book Club, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid cook, and her family will greatly miss her chocolate chip cookies, deviled eggs, boiled custard, pies and pizzelles. She loved butterflies, word puzzles, rummy, and acting like she didn't know how to play Euchre as she watched her kids and grandkids play. She is survived and loved by her daughter Alice (Tim) McCarthy of Geneva; grandchildren, Timmy (Natalie) McCarthy, Kevin Joseph McCarthy, and Caitlin Marie McCarthy; and great grandchildren, Rose Alice, Noah Joseph, Rowan Zygmunt, Teague Edward S., and Stella Clare. Georgene was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; brother, Charles Blanchard; sisters, Anita Wilson, and Corleah Warnock; and her parents. Calling hours will be held Monday, August 1, 2022, from 6-8PM at the Zaback-Williams-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at 1PM at the Finley United Methodist Church, 958 Lincoln Ave, Steubenville, OH 43952. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, 1720 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, Ohio. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sanctuary of Geneva activities fund for the enjoyment of the people at the facility who were her second family.
