Obituary of Max L. Cobb

Max L. Cobb, age 88, born in Corry, Pennsylvania on October 29th, 1933 passed away peacefully at home in Ashtabula, Ohio on August 16, 2022. Max dedicated his life to loving and supporting his family, especially his wife Sandra (Armitage) Cobb and three children, son Barry Cobb, and daughters Brenda Cobb and Bobette Sockman. Max grew up on a farm in Spring Creek, Pennsylvania and graduated from Corry High School in 1951. Max proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 - 1957, being recognized as Airman of the Month in January 1957. After the service, Max attended Penn State University, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1959. Max and Sandra had known each other practically their entire lives, both growing up on farms just down the road from each other. They attended the same school and the same church growing up, and Max was good friends with Sandy's older brother George Armitage. After returning from the service, Max's sister-in-law encouraged him to ask Sandy out on a date. They continued to date while Max worked on his degree, and they fell in love. After graduation, Max and Sandy married on September 5th, 1959 in Cobb's Corners Community Church. Max was hired as an Electrical Engineer by Reliance Electric & Engineering in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1959, where he worked for 36 years, retiring in 1995. As they built their married lives together in Ashtabula, Max and Sandy attended Saybrook United Methodist Church, where Max's uncle, the Reverend Hubert Cobb, was the Pastor. They have continued to be active in the church for more than 60 years, with Max serving on many church committees over the years, including Treasurer for the Endowment Fund. After retirement, Max continued to work with Reliance for a number of years in Cleveland, Ohio and Gainesville, Georgia on a contract basis. Max was an engineer at heart and was probably unrivaled at efficiency in loading luggage into a car trunk, arranging groceries in a shopping cart or adding a level of precision to any number of life's imprecise activities. Max was truly a humble servant, helping anyone in need without concern about being recognized for his efforts. He was a great role model for family and friends and instilled his children with a strong work ethic and attention to detail that you would expect from an engineer father. He was also a great handyman, helping his children and friends alike with any number of projects, as long as we didn't need plumbing work done! He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, loved working in his yard and despite monitoring his diet very carefully, had a weakness for Mounds candy bars. Max is survived by his wife Sandra (Armitage); three children, son Barry (Elizabeth) of Medina, OH, and daughters Brenda of Ashtabula, OH and Bobette (William) Sockman of Chardon, OH; six grandchildren Nicholas, Max, John and Mark Cobb, Adam and Olivia Passerell; sisters-in-law Janet McVicker and Linda Conn and many nieces and nephews. Max is preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Edith Cobb; mother-in-law and father-in-law Ethel and Victor Armitage; brother and sister-in-law Harold and Joanne Cobb; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Donald and Jean Armitage, Nancy and Dave Johnson, George Armitage and Lawrence Conn; nieces and nephews Jerry and Jeff Cobb, Jackie Loveless, Lorelei and Lucy Armitage. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 19, 2022 from 5PM-7PM at the Saybrook United Methodist Church, 7900 Depot Road, Ashtabula. A funeral service celebrating Max's life will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 12:00PM at Saybrook United Methodist Church, where an additional hour of calling will be observed from 11AM until time of service at 12:00PM. A private burial ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund at Saybrook United Methodist Church.
