Obituary of Beverly Ann McKean

Beverly Ann McKean, 81, of Ashtabula, OH passed away surrounded by loved ones on Monday, October 31, 2022 at her home in Saybrook, OH. Beverly was born August 10, 1941 in Buffalo, NY, to Burdette and Evelyn (Bailey) Broadbent. Beverly grew up in Hamburg, NY and graduated from Frontier Central High School in Hamburg, NY. After high school, she earned an Associate's Degree in Electronics from Erie Community College in 1962 in Buffalo, NY. Beverly worked in the electronics field for many years with international industry leading companies including API Delevan Electronics and Audon Electronics in NY. She held several significant positions with both companies including Crew Leader, Assembler, Quality Control Lead and Purchasing Lead. She also worked independently with the University of Buffalo to build special custom printed circuit boards for high profile elaborate projects. On July 11, 1970, Beverly married Bernard "Barney" "Joe" McKean in Wanakah, NY and they shared nearly 50 years happily together before his passing. Beverly was a devoted Catholic and member of Our Lady of Peace Parish where she routinely served at Mother of Sorrows Church as a Parish Greeter, ministering Chapel Adoration, a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Church Choir. Additionally, she served at the annual Catholic Lenten fish fry dinners, Mt. Carmel Bazaar festivals and chaired several committees at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Beverly and Barney McKean were also known for devoting several months of their time and effort serving to refinish and restore the antique woodwork throughout Mother of Sorrows Church back to original historic condition from the 1890's. Beverly was an experienced Samoyed dog handler traveling nationally alongside her husband to dog shows throughout North America who achieved numerous championships for the working group class of the Samoyed breed. She was a registered breeder of Samoyeds with the American Kennel Club. Beverly also had a passion for antiques and collectables. She owned and managed an antique store for 18 years known as Used Useable Gallery in Ashtabula. She had an extensive collection of Hummels from her time in business. Beverly enjoyed spending time with family and her pet bird, attending auctions, church, bingo, going to casinos, playing canasta and golf, working in the yard, outdoor decorations, baking Christmas cookies, visiting her hometown, county fairs, local events, and attractions such as the Grape Jamboree and Geneva-on-the-Lake strip. Beverly loved to volunteer and help others. She worked for Catholic Charities in Ashtabula, OH and Hopevale Inc. in Hamburg, NY helping troubled youth and adolescents turn their lives around. She was a Voting Election Day Precinct Election Official in Saybrook. Beverly spent 22 years as a very active devoted volunteer with Hospice of the Western Reserve in Ashtabula County. She freely and continually dedicated personal time to offer Hospice Care to patients in their private homes, assisted living communities and at nursing homes. She was always actively engaged with the Hospice "By Your Side" program where she was present with families as loved ones passed all hours of the day or night. She always participated in the annual Hospice Memorial Candle Services, Hospice Cake Auctions, Hospice Blues Project Fundraising, and other Hospice functions. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard McKean on December 27, 2019; mother, Evelyn (Bailey) Broadbent; father, Burdette Broadbent; brothers, James and Kenneth Broadbent; and step-daughter, Deloris (McKean) Benson. She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn (Christopher) Mack of Saybrook, OH; son, David Smith, Jr. of Buffalo, NY; stepdaughter, Cynthia Kopper of Batavia, NY; sister, Florence Galley of Derby, NY; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, November 11, 2022 at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Our Lady of Peace - Mt. Carmel Church, 1200 E 21st St., Ashtabula. Rev. Raymond Thomas, Priest will preside. Burial of cremated remains will be later in Hamburg, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve Ashtabula County.
