On Sunday, December 11, 2022, Lula-Marie Maroon, loving grandmother and mother of two, passed away at age 103. She was born December 10, 1919 in Floresville, TX. A retired educator, Lula-Marie graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Wheeling, WV. She earned a bachelor's degree in education at West Liberty State College and another in Liberal Arts from Boston University before earning her Master's in Language and Linguistics from Georgetown University's Foreign Services Institute. As a West Liberty student, she reactivated the Language Clubs (French and Spanish) and held the university's first Language Festival. She was a teacher and educational coordinator at Wheeling Country Day School. She also taught at St. Michael School, St. Alphonsus School,Triadelphia High School and West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling, WV. Additionally, she taught in Belmont County Schools and Strayer Business College. Lula-Marie was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy, where she served in the W.A.V.E.S. program from 1943-1945. During her service, she trained in New York, Iowa, and Massachusetts before accepting her assignment as a Yeoman Instructor and Registered Publications Issuing Officer in Charleston, SC that ultimately led to her promotion to Ensign. Her service in WWII led to additional administrative opportunities, including her time as Assistant to Vice President/Secretary-Treasurer James Carey at the National Headquarters of the AFL/CIO, Project Officer for the Technical Cooperation Program (Southeast Asia desk) at the Department of State, Administrator to the Labor Liaison Committee under President Eisenhower, founding Credit Manager at Montgomery Ward catalog office in Wheeling, WV, and Assistant to Rt. Rev. William F Troy, S.J. at Wheeling College. Lula-Marie was a member of the American Association of University Women, a long-time supporter and board member at the Wheeling Symphony Auxiliary, and a researcher at Wheeling Area Historical Society. She served her community as the Ohio County representative on the West Virginia Bicentennial Committee and was a charter member of the Charter Guild of Wheeling College. She was also associated with the following organizations: Wheeling Child Study Club, The Women's Club of Wheeling, the West Virginia Political Club, Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts of America, the Oglebay Women's golf club, and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. As a teenager, she was active in tennis circles in her area. Lula-Marie is preceded in death by Mary Ann Khoury (mother), Charles Khoury (father), Thomas J. Maroon, Sr. (husband), brothers Dr. Naef K. Basile, Clinton B. Corry, Sr., Esq., Samuel A. Khoury, Eva Mae K. Coury (sister), and William Robert Kline (grandson). She is survived by her two children Dr. Thomas J. (Pamela) Maroon, Jr. of Greensburg, PA, and Mary Ann (William) Kline of North Kingsville, OH; grandchildren Dr. Elizabeth Kline, Emily Kline, Geo Maroon, and Thomas (Samantha Stewart) Maroon, great grandson Julian Stewart-Maroon, and several nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Zaback-William-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, OH 44004. Funeral service will follow at the funeral home at noon. A luncheon at the funeral home will be served after the service. Entombment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1685 National Rd., Wheeling, WV 26003 on Monday, December 19, 2022 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula, OH 44004 in Lula-Marie Maroon's honor.
