Obituary of Anna Laurice Reid

Anna "Laurie" Reid passed away on February 19, 2023, in Tucson, AZ, where she had lived since 1996. She is survived by daughter Patrice Reid of San Francisco, CA. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James P. Reid, EdD. Laurie was born in 1928 in Ohio and lived there for seven years before moving to Niagara Falls, NY, with her parents and two sisters, Jeanette and Marie. She graduated in 1945 from LaSalle High School as a Regents Scholar, having participated in numerous extracurricular activities. Laurie went on to graduate from Michigan State University with a degree in economics. Shortly afterward, in 1949, she married James "Jim" Reid, who was from Pinckney, MI. Both Laurie and Jim taught in Lansing and Jackson, MI, before moving to San Jose, CA, where Jim entered college teaching and Laurie continued teaching first grade in Campbell, CA. Simultaneously, both were doing graduate work: Laurie in California teacher certification and Jim in doctoral studies at Stanford University. A career move took them to Kansas City, where Laurie became a stay-at-home mom and Jim a tenured university professor and department head. Subsequent career moves took them to Ames, IA, and South Kingstown, RI. At various times, Laurie was active in the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters and P.E.O. Laurie's lasting legacy includes the thousands of students who learned to love reading in her classroom. She cared deeply about education and enabled many students to continue their graduate studies through scholarships as well. You can celebrate her life – lived long and lived well – by bringing learning into your life and the lives of those in your community. Laurie will be interred next to her husband in Ohio, where four generations of her family lay in rest. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Michigan State University for the Reid Memorial Scholarship Fund in Economics and Kinesiology.
