Dr. Chisa Echendu posted a condolence

I immigrated to the United States, to attend college as a teenager. My first year was at a Tri-C, where I also worked in the campus bookstore and candy store, to help finance my education. He would walk into the candy store EVERY morning, grab two packs of peanut M&Ms; I’d ring him up at the register, make small talk and off he’d go. One day, I decided to keep his M&Ms at the register, BEFORE he even stepped foot inside the store. He laughed so hard, somewhat “embarrassed” I knew his routine. From then on, he’d come straight to the counter each morning; we’d talk about sports, politics, education, or whatever interesting thing was happening in our world that day, and off he’d go, peanut M&Ms in hand.
One day, I told him about an opportunity I’d received to play tennis for a nearby University, for scholarship/tuition. I was over the moon, because as an international student, tuition was HIGH, and scholarships, rare. He advised me to proceed with the tennis gig, but to also consider applying for academic scholarships. He told me his name was “Manny”, and that I should come by the college counseling office for guidance with scholarships. I knew for sure he was confused, because there was NO WAY an international student would qualify for an academic scholarship. I just knew it! Didn’t matter that I had a 4.0 GPA. Of course I never went...until one day when I had nothing else going on. I showed up at the counseling office and asked for “Manny”. The secretary EYED me up and down like “Manny? How dare you call our boss ‘Manny?’ Are you crazy?”. Anyway, turns out he was a big shot on campus, PhD. aka Dr. Pomales, director of the campus counseling dept., etc etc. I had no idea, because...unassuming.
I was finally let in to see him. He clicked, clicked, opened my grades on his computer, made a few phone calls, bragged about me/my grades to whomever was on the other end. By the end, I’d been offered FULL ride academic scholarships to multiple universities (tuition, room and board, etc). You can’t even imagine how stunned I was was. My brother, another excellent student was extended the same offers. We chose the Leslie H. Cochran University Scholars/Honors Program at Youngstown State University (YSU), where we had an absolutely INCREDIBLE college experience. There is now a scholarship for International students at YSU, in honor of our parents. You will also find “Manny” in the acknowledgment page of every thesis I’ve written (Masters, PhD...what have you) because he truly changed the trajectory of my educational experience in this country. We’d email back and forth for years and years. He didn’t do much social media, or at least I never found him. Last several emails went unanswered, and I’d been desperately trying to find him. Tonight’s search yielded a link to this obituary, and I’m just at a loss. What an awesome, thoughtful, brilliant and generous soul he was. Rest in peace, Manny. And I hope you have more than two packs of peanut M&Ms everyday.

Dr. Pomales holds a special place in my heart. He paved a way that streamlined the academic pursuits of me and several family members. Because of him, I have been able to accomplish unimaginable things. I will never forget him. Meeting him at Tri-C changed the trajectory of my life. His smile, enthusiasm and generous spirit have impacted so many, myself in particular. God rest his soul, and provide solace for his family.

We Love and miss you POP! Lawrence and John send their Love and respect. They wish they could have been there at your home going. We were just remembering how you covered my friends (brothers) and put them under your wings without judgement.
We laughed remembering when you used to pack us up in the Pinto and take us to the park and batting cages. Thanks DAD
