I have, and will keep so many memories of the man I called Dad. When I was a mischievous boy always in to his tools and personal stuff, one of my younger brothers was having trouble with his big wheel tricycle. It had picked up a string or small rope and had wrapped around the axle preventing them from flying down the hill and spinning sideways. So big brother had a solution and knew where dad kept his handy and sharp pocket knife. I would simply get the knife and cut the string so my brother could continue risking his life on those fun and crazy big wheels. I started cutting and prying the string away from the axle, and eventually got all out. In doing so, I had broken the tip off of dads knife. I folded the knife back up and put it right back where I got it, and never said a word to nobody. The following Saturday I was upstairs in my room when he called me down stairs. He had the pocket knife in his hand and as I walked down the stairs and sat on one of them he looked at me showing me the knife and asked if I had broken the tip. I bowed my head in shame and admitted that I had. What he did next was not what I was expecting, he folded the knife and handed it to me and told me I could have it, and then he thanked me for telling him the truth. I never forgot that and I don't think I ever lied to him after that. He was a great dad, we didn't always have everything we wanted, but we always, always had everything we needed.
As we were growing up I can't ever remember him missing a day of work. Sometimes it seemed as if he cared more about his job than he did his family. Later I would hear him tell people that if you don't have a job you can't take care of your family. That was his most important role. He let us make our own mistakes to find and learn our way through life which created the people my siblings and I are today. I see his parenting through all my nieces and nephews that have all became such great people. He will live forever and be such a big part of all our lives. His love for family will carry on for many generations to come.
Love you Dad!
